Feral Pigs

Feral pigs are an every growing problem in areas of South Canterbury and Otago and when in large numbers pigs can destroy hectares of the best pasture overnight. When using modern techniques like motion cameras, GPS tracking gear and proven trapping cages HCC has the ability to considerably reduce pig numbers.

Options include:

  • Trapping – permanent or temporary pig traps can be erected, pre-fed, monitored and all animals removed.
  • Aerial shooting – with and experienced shooter and pilot this can be a very effective way of controlling high pig populations. In low numbers techniques using tracking gear on Judas pigs is proven to be very effective.
  • Poisoning – A new feral pig poison has entered the market with excellent results with no bio-accumulation and an effective antidote for primary poisoning. Feeding bait stations can get established and maintained in pig problem areas. (Phone for more information).
